Okay, so I found out at 8:15pm that the Gators jumped Michigan to get the nod for the National Championship game in Glendale, AZ on Jan. 8th.
I do not think that this has totally sunk in yet. I think that all the buzz about the BSC and how much crap it is just really has taken over and one of my best buds went to Michigan so obviously one of us was going to be pretty pissed at the end of the day.
Here are the reasons why I think it should be Florida in the game (even though I think the BCS is idiotic and needs to be burned)...
1. SEC Champs - Michigan was not their conference champ and the title game should have conference champs only
2. Toughest schedule in the country
3. It is not a rematch
4. Always found ways to win (screw so called "style points")
I know all of those might not be good reasons, but there it is. The "people" have spoken and this is what we get.
I have solved the problem of the BCS, but that's for another blog.
For now, I will sit and wait over a month to see what happens. It is going to drive me crazy and I'll do a lot of thinking and pining and pacing... and that's why I'm going to die at a young age.
At the moment, "It's Great to be a Florida Gator!!!"
Okay, so we're coming down to the end of the season and I just have this feeling that the Gators will be screwed. See, there is this horrible thing called the BCS that is going to probably screw at least 2 teams.
Pretty much the Gators could beat FSU and win the SEC Championship (which most consider to be the toughest conference in college football) and finish 12-1 and be left out of the big game. I have to admit that while we might not be the number 1 team in all the land, I think we'd have a better shot of beating Ohio State than Michigan would playing them again. Pretty much Ohio State and Troy Smith just tour apart the secondary of Michigan... The Gators have a MUCH better secondary and would never allow the big plays to happen that Michgian let get through.
What hurts is that FSU sucks... they normally are good and then it looks like a big win but that is not the case this year AT ALL!
Not sure if a win over Arkansas will garner enough BCS "bonus points" to get into the big game.
There is also the problem of the USC/Notre Dame game... If USC wins then it's a big win for them and would probably put them into the Championship... but if Notre Dame wins then do they jump UF and UM? Michigan killed ND earlier so that wouldn't be fair for them to go instead of Michigan. But, again, what about Florida?
Guess we'll wait and see. One day someone will figure out that a playoff will get rid of all this craziness... but not sure if that'll be in the next 10 years??? It has always been a problem and there are still people who think it works just fine and that's just wrong!
Guess the Gators have to take it one game at a time and see how it all plays out? Go Gators!
So this weekend my buddies and I are getting together. We are collectively known as RAAJ and try to get together for events every few months. I am in Orlando but the other 3 are along the Southeast Coast of Florida. I'm headed down to Ft. Lauderdale.
Saturday will be filled with College Football. One of the guys went to Michigan so obviously the Ohio State/Michigan game is pretty important (since ESPN has been talking about it since July it seems).
Then my other buddy, Goat, loves NASCAR for some reason and got us all tickets to some big race (I guess) in Homestead. I know nothing about NASCAR except that the cars just keep going in circles to the left. That's about all I know. But I guess it is a big event and there will be lots of tailgating... which is really why I'm going. Figure if I drink enough Busch Light then I won't care about how boring the cars are.
So after being upset all night and all morning, I have come to the conclusion that the loss last night was the best for this Gator Team. While I think the Gators got hosed on the "fumble/incomplete pass" call, I think it will motivate them and force them to step up even more for the rest of the season. Sure, it take us out of the National Championship picture (for now) but it still puts us in the driver's seat for the SEC.... could even maybe face Auburn again in Atlanta and I am sure we'd take them then.
For now the Gators have to use the bye week to rest and get ready for a sub-par Georgia team (but you never know what can happen in a big rivalry). Then we also need to focus on beating Vandy, South Carolina & FSU (once again, sub par but rivalry).
So there it is, Auburn, like in 2001, ended a possible National Championship Run. I still think we'll be okay and we have a great shot at SEC glory!
Go Gators!
So the Gators are now #2.... not really sure that it is that big of a deal at this point in the season, but always nice to see that we're receiving some credit.
The LSU game was not pretty, but we stepped up where we needed to for the W! The Defense and Special Teams REALLY stepped up and the combo of Leak and Tebow kept the supposed best D in the nation on their toes!
Now we're #2 in one poll and #3 in the USA Today/Coach's Poll. I guess that means if the Gators win out then there is a good chance they're going to the National Championship game... but I'm not getting excited just yet. I've been here before and I know that there is always a good chance for some heartache.
First we have to go to Auburn (who must be pretty upset after their loss to Arkansas this week). Then a much needed bye week but then to Jacksonville for the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party (No matter what the school officials say, I'm still calling it that). I'm not as worried about UGA after watching Tennessee man-handle them last night. Then things get a little easier (S. Carlona, Vandy, Western Carolina, & FSU - Yes, FSU is A LOT easier this season). Then the possible SEC Championship game (which can always be a possible last minute heartache). But, if we make it through all of that, we deserve a spot in the BIG GAME!
Just want to also point out that THE SWAMP IS BACK! It is back to being the hardest stadium for visitors in the Nation!!! There is NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!!! The atmosphere and noise and all the fans... it was a great sight to see!
Here's to being halfway through a great season! GO GATORS!
I just found out, literally an hour ago, that I'm headed to The Swamp to watch the Florida/LSU game! Biggest game of the year (in the Swamp). A win would be HUGE! I think we have it in us! LSU has not faced an offense as good as us yet... though we haven't faced a defense as good as them yet.
Should be close! Hopefully the Swamp will make it tough of them!!!
GO GATORS!
So lots has happened in the world of the Gators since my last Blog... yes, the did beat U of Tennessee! Which is very exciting! Now they are on the inside track to the SEC East! They for sure have the toughest ahead of them though with Auburn and LSU and Georgia still on the docket!
We also found a running back in Wynn... hopefully he can remain healthy and keep producing the 100 yards a game that we'll need to win those tough games!
It seems there is all this stir about Tebow and Leak and all this crap. I think it's stupid. Tebow is going to be a good QB, but if we are going to win the SEC this season, it will be on the shoulders of Leak and Gator fans need to get behind him! He's had an amazing season thus far and has really stepped up as a leader! Tebow is fun to watch for a few plays, but everyone needs to realize that it's better that he's learning as a Freshman so he can have an amazing next 3 seasons!
Looking forward to this week's game against Bama. Hopefully we can get them back for last year!
So I can't believe that kick off is almost exactly 2 weeks away! (1 week, 6 days, 23 hours and 45 minutes to be exact).
Don't think I'm going to make it to the first Florida game but I
have tickets to the second one so I'm ready for some Gator Football
Tailgate magic!!!
In reading all the stuff out there about the Gators, looks like they
are ready. Look for Brandon Siler to come up big this year on
Defense! He's an animal and eats small linemen or qbs for
lunch/dinner (depending on gametime).
SI has us as 9... and going to the SEC Championship (to lose to
LSU). I think that's not that bad. We'd then play in the
Capital One Bowl (formally the Citrus Bowl) in Orlando and we'd
obviously have lots of Home State Support!
Can't wait until the first HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERE COME THE GATORS!!!
So because we are SO CLOSE to the start of College Football, it's
time to talk about the USA Today Coach's Poll came out last week and
I'm just going to make some comments on the top 11...
1. Ohio State - Obviously had a pretty good season last year (with
only 1 conference loss) but the Big 10 is not what it used to be!
Michigan is hurting and that hurts Ohio State's claim at being in the
top of the Nation (though it does make it easy to go undefeated).
2. Texas - Last year's National Champ does deserve a spot in the top
5. They have a good shot at having another great season with
Oklahoma struggling. But will they be able to do it without Vince?
3. USC - Great coach but LOTS of lost talent! Look for USC to finally rack up a few losses.
4. Notre Dame - Hate them! That's all I have to say about that.
5. Oklahoma - These rankings obviously came out before all the trouble
happened with them. Look for them to be out of the Top 10 even if
they do win their season opener (against UAB so they probably
will). Losing your QB 3 weeks before the season opener is never
good!
6. Auburn - While this is low for our first SEC Team, I think you can't
really pick which of the top 4 SEC Teams deserves to be in the Top 5
until the season really gets going. Obviously the SEC, again,
will be the toughest Conference and could beat up on each other to keep
the Champ out of the National Championship.
7. West Virginia - Had a great year in a weak Big East. Look for
them to possibly run the table in the Big East but be woken up in their
BCS game.
8. Florida - Obviously we know how I feel about my Gators... but I like
this ranking. I think that they'll show up and play like a Top 10
Team but I think they still have a lot to prove and, at this moment,
aren't a Top 5 Team. The SEC is going to be extremely tough and
it will be a HUGE Test for the Gators. They play LSU, Alabama
& Spurrier's Gamecocks in the Swamp (which should help them win
those games) but a tough away game at Auburn will be a test.
Also, even though Tennesee sucks and FSU is no where close to the
powerhouse they used to be, you can never discount going there (though
the Gators are 1 and 0 on Bobby Bowden Field!). Look for the
Cocktail Party (Florida/Georgia in Jacksonville for those who don't
know) to be the decider of the SEC East.
9. LSU - see above about tough SEC... look for HUGE test to be the trip
to The Swamp. They aren't the same team since Sabin left.
10. FSU - The first ACC Team is 10... not good for the ACC... also not
good that it's FSU because they are still rebuilding and seem to be
constantly kicking players off their team. Obiously FSU/Miami is
a big game but look for a possible sleeper in the ACC to win the first
ACC Champ game. (And obviously look for Florida to win for the
third year straight!)
11. Miami - I had to make it 11 instead of 10 just to put Miami in
there... Larry Coker is a horrible coach and they are showing signs of
being the Miami team that will be under probation soon (after firing
their coach). I can see the top of the ACC looking different than
these rankings reflect.
So that's what I have! Can't wait for it to start!!! Go Team!
